A Short Biographical Sketch

Imam Sharafuddin Muhammad bin Sa’eed al-Busiri (رحمه الله), commonly known as Imam al-Busiri, was born in 13th-century Egypt. A master calligrapher and a disciple of prominent Sufi luminaries, he composed several eulogies praising the Prophet , of which the Qasida Burdah remains the most celebrated. Renowned for its depth of devotion, the poem interweaves themes of love, repentance, and moral reflection, reflecting al-Busiri’s strong spiritual upbringing.

According to tradition, Imam al-Busiri wrote this masterpiece while suffering from paralysis. After fervent supplication and composing praises of the Prophet , he dreamt that he was cured by the mantle of the Prophet, thus giving this poem the name “Burdah” (Mantle). Over time, it became customary to recite it in gatherings, seeking blessings (barakah) and spiritual upliftment.

The Occasion & The Ode

Qasida al-Burdah is a “Meemiyya” (all verses ending in the letter م), consisting of 160–165 lines. It elegantly recounts the birth of the Prophet , his moral excellence, miracles, ascension (Miʿrāj), and the overarching message of Islam. Each line carries an earnest desire to emulate his virtues and seek his intercession (shafāʿah), anchoring the love of the Prophet at the poem’s core.

For centuries, Muslims have read and memorized the Qasida Burdah for its poetic artistry and deep spirituality. It is commonly recited at religious gatherings, weddings, and other momentous occasions, often accompanied by rhythmic chanting that stirs the heart and soul.

“The Qasida Burdah and other nasheeds within these pages carry forth an enduring legacy, binding hearts together through their timeless verses and uplifting melodies.

We hope this anthology serves as a wellspring of inspiration, enlightening hearts and kindling love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ across all who read it."
